Strep Throat Testing and Treatment

Strep throat is a bacterial infection caused by Group A Streptococcus. It leads to inflammation, throat pain, and can worsen quickly without proper treatment.
If you notice the following symptoms, start with a home strep test.
- sudden, severe sore throat
- pain when swallowing
- fever (often above 101°F / 38.3°C)
- red, swollen tonsils (sometimes with white patches)
- swollen lymph nodes in the neck
- no cough (this often points to bacterial, not viral infection)
Strep Test Results
A positive home test is a reason to see a doctor as soon as possible to confirm the diagnosis and begin treatment.
A negative result does not always rule out strep throat. Strong symptoms such as fever, severe throat pain, or difficulty swallowing still require medical evaluation, especially in the early stage of infection.
An in-person visit allows a provider to confirm the diagnosis, rule out other conditions, and prescribe antibiotics when needed.
Confirmed strep throat is treated with prescription antibiotics to fully clear the infection and reduce the risk of complications.
How Long Symptoms Last
With proper treatment, symptoms usually begin to improve within 24 to 48 hours after starting antibiotics. Most people feel significantly better within a few days.
Don’t Delay Care for Suspected Strep
Throat Strep throat should not be left untreated. The bacteria can trigger an abnormal immune response, where the body begins to attack its own tissues. This can affect the heart, joints, and kidneys.
Early diagnosis and proper treatment significantly reduce these risks.
